Starter Scale-Out Architecture

In large systems, the Ignition Scale-Out architecture is excellent for distributing a workload across multiple servers. Best of all, Scale-Out makes it easy to scale Ignition as your system grows. The Ignition Scale-Out Starter package includes all the Ignition software you need to deploy this basic architecture.

Gateway Types​

In Scale-Out, an Ignition Gateway is used for a specific set of tasks based on its placement. There are two common types:

Front-End Gateway

This Gateway is responsible for hosting the clients, allowing the Back-End Gateways to focus solely on PLC communication and history.

Back-End Gateway

One or more back-end Gateways are responsible for communicating with PLCs and other devices, and executing Tags. They share their local Tags with the Front-End Gateways via a Remote Tag Provider, and are generally responsible for recording history. Additionally, alarms can be added to tags locally, and exposed elsewhere in the system.
